America's Wine Country: The best wine hotels in the US

Lacking the pretensions of Europe’s older wine valleys, the Americans mosey into the frame to cultivate their own modern, laid-back take on grape culture. Led by Cali’s Napa Valley and Sonoma, America’s wine regions receive more and more recognition across the globe, with Alaskan, Idahoan, Coloradan, Washington and East coast wineries hot on their tails. For countryside adventures as well as a whole lot of Cab Sauv,  take your pick of the best wineries in Napa Valley or combine bed and board with your winery tour at one of the best wine hotels in America’s Wine Country below.

1. Bardessono, Yountville, California

Staying in California for the meantime to enjoy year-round sunshine and West Coast prestige, we start at the eco-luxe retreat of Bardessono in Yountville. Almost everything on the grounds here was locally produced, including the organic ingredients from on-site restaurant Lucy. Try the Friday night wine tasting on site or take a stroll to a number of esteemed eateries and vineyards such as Jessup Cellars down the road. By day, visitors to Bardessono can take yoga class by the pool, relax at the spa or hot-air balloon over the region, hopping on loaner carbon fibre bikes to adventure further out.

2. Andaz Napa, California

Andaz Napa is a fairly large boutique hotel in downtown Napa, breathing both convenience and countryside charm. The loft-style or pet-friendly rooms here are just minutes from Highway 29, the main route to wineries such as Quintessa, Sterling and Domaine Chandon. If the wine wasn’t enough, take in the sunset on the outdoor terrace while staff supply you with handcrafted cocktails, farm-to-table fare and live music. Then, when you’d like to get out and explore, simply walk into town for the Oxbow Public Market and the Napa Valley Wine Train.

3. Poetry Inn Napa Valley, California

Of the best wineries with lodging located in Napa’s Stags Leap District, Poetry Inn Napa Valley is every romantic’s dream. Book early to secure one of the inn’s five adults-only rooms, arriving at the private hillside location just minutes after leaving downtown Yountville. As well as soaking tubs, wood-burning fireplaces and private balconies in each room, the Cliff Lede Vineyard team also present a heated pool, spa and namesake vineyard across a sixty-acre estate. Sleep in to take advantage of the free gourmet breakfasts each day!

4. Farmhouse Inn, Forestville, California

Farmhouse Inn is a family-run B&B based on the Russian River Valley family estate, markedly more luxurious than any other B&B you’ve tried before. This 25-suite wine country inn features private decks and fireplaces afront apple orchards and gardens, also satisfying guests with seasonal Californian fare at the Michelin-starred Farmhouse Restaurant. Enjoy your time at the farm spa or speed off in the host’s Tesla Model X for a sommelier-led wine tour across Sonoma County.

5. Auberge du Soleil, Napa Valley, California

In keeping with the French countryside feel, Auberge du Soleil is like Napa Valley’s very own Château Margaux, founded by French restauranteur Claude Rouas. As well as having bragging rights for Michelin-star cuisine, this adults-only getaway ensures guests reach peak relaxation, most likely to happen in the terrace hot tub overlooking vineyards and olive groves. Stay beside the fireside in your exposed-wood suite if you please, but don’t miss out on the outdoor pool, spa and fitness centre before yoga and Mediterranean-style meals.

6. North Fork Table & Inn, Southold, New York

Putting food at the centre of its attentions, North Fork Table & Inn is a chic countryside B&B in Long Island set inside a historic property recently restored by Michelin-starred Chef John Fraser and his team. North Fork, surrounded by the farms, vineyards and fisheries of Southold, is a dream base, also serving farm-to-table fare from the centrepiece restaurant, previously nominated by James Beard for its sublime New American tasting menus.

7. SummerWood Winery and Inn, Paso Robles, California

Another of the best wine hotels in the US comes in the form of SummerWood Winery and Inn, based out of the hills of Paso Robles in California. Guests are greeted on arrival with a bottle of SummerWood wine, as well as seasonal nibbles, desserts and coffee each evening. Cosy and intimate with just nine rooms in farmhouse style, SummerWood is also perfectly backgrounded by the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, while further out you’ll discover Rhône and Bordeaux wineries spanning rolling coastal vistas.

8. The Farmhouse at Veritas, Virginia

It is said (by us) that wine is truth and nowhere is that truer than The Farmhouse at Veritas, based out of the Monticello American Viticulture Area (aka Virginia’s wine country). One of the smallest and best hotels in wine country, The Farmhouse woos guests with complimentary wines and boozy breakfasts before taking them out to explore the century-old estate. Down to earth yet elegant, The Farmhouse showcases both wine and Nelson County produce, not to mention fine regional views across its grounds in proximity to Afton community, nature hikes and more.

9. Allison Inn and Spa, Newberg, Oregon

Allison Inn and Spa brings a perfect mix of wine and pampering with its hotel spa concept on 35 vine-covered acres in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Among the best winery resorts in USA just an hour from Portland, Allison Inn sits upon Oregon’s most productive wine regions, with groves, gardens and, of course, grapes across the estate. Enjoy meals at on-site JORY Restaurant & Bar where an extensive list of delicious Pinot Noir saves you having the white wine vs red wine debate. At the spa, treatments have a wine-centric edge, while the infinity pool and fitness studio are open on return from walking in Willamette Valley.

10. Inn at Black Star Farms, Suttons Bay, Michigan

Last up is the Inn at Black Star Farms, a lodging that puts Michigan’s Traverse Wine Coast on our radar. Ribboned by Old Mission and Leelanau Wine Trails, the huge 160-acre estate is perfectly placed to get in amongst the countryside, some 15 kilometres north of Traverse City along the scenic M22 road. Farm fresh breakfasts and complimentary wine tastings are par for the course, with VIP tours of the Barrel Room, horse paddock and grounds for those that want it. Otherwise, get out to explore the hills, beaches and lakes of Suttons Bay breaking at countless small towns beyond.
