Tell us a little the history of your brand

Brøchner Hotels was established in 1982 by Bergliot and Hans Brøchner-Mortensen and is today owned by their son, Søren Brøchner-Mortensen (Owner and Director of Business Development), and his wife, Mette Brøchner-Mortensen (Owner and Manager of Design and Interior).

When Søren Brøchner-Mortensen took over Brøchner Hotels, he set ambitious goals for the hotel chain. He wanted to extend, develop, and focus entirely on boutique hotels. Søren wanted to renew the concept of boutique hotels in Copenhagen altogether, and he wanted to focus on opening luxury boutique hotels in buildings with unique architecture, history and design. Today, Brøchner Hotels still aim at bringing in new life to original and extraordinary buildings and give something back to the local community in Copenhagen. Besides, Brøchner Hotels is known for running boutique hotels with great care and attention – a vision that has stayed the same ever since Brøchner Hotels was founded.

In 2014, Brøchner Hotels opened its first new boutique hotel in Copenhagen, Hotel SP34, in the charming Latin Quarter. The same year, Brøchner Hotels took over a hotel icon, Hotel Astoria, Copenhagen’s only functionalist hotel building dating back to 1934, and transformed it into a 3+ star boutique hotel with respect for the original details. Later followed Avenue Hotel Copenhagen, located in a former bank and classic apartment building in the beautiful Frederiksberg. Next in line came Hotel Danmark, a former missionary hotel in buildings dating back to 1791, placed in the Cultural District of Copenhagen. Today, it’s a unique 4+ star luxury boutique hotel with a fantastic rooftop terrace, Vineyard, and an interior that mirrors the Cultural District, to name a few.

“The aim is to bring in new life to original, extraordinary buildings and give something back to the local community”

In 2018, Brøchner Hotels opened its first 5+ star boutique hotel in a converted transformer station from 1963 in the heart of Copenhagen. The building’s brutalist architecture and original elements are kept and mixed with modern design, furniture and custom-made pieces. Latest opening was in 2019 when Brøchner Hotels opened the doors to Hotel Ottilia, a unique 4+ star boutique hotel in two former Carlsberg Brewery buildings in the Carlsberg City District dating back to 1881 and 1969. The buildings were formerly used as beer storage and malt storage. Today, they are listed by the Danish state, and consequently, the original elements remain and are visible around the hotel.

The CEO of Brøchner Hotels, Nickolas Krabbe Bjerg, joined Brøchner Hotels in April 2019. With experience from Tivoli Gardens and Espresso House amongst others, Nickolas brought in insights and knowledge from the experience industry in Denmark. An industry, which is booming and continue to evolve rapidly in the future. Together with Søren Brøchner-Mortensen, he has set a new ambitious strategy for the boutique hotel chain, which includes an aim for Brøchner Hotels to be the leading boutique hotel chain in the Nordic countries.

As part of this journey, Brøchner Hotels open its first design hotel in March 2020, BOOK1 Design Hostel, in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city booming with culture.

BOOK1 Design Hostel is in a former main library building from 1934 in Aarhus,  The original elements have been carefully kept and are visible throughout the design hostel. The interior such as ceiling lights and the design of pod dorms also serve as a reference to the original library bookshelves and interior. Thus, BOOK1 Design Hostel is a perfect example of Brøchner Hotels’ take on opening projects in unique locations with extraordinary architecture and designs and with original elements that make the place unique. It is also closely connected with the local community and area in Aarhus – just like Brøchner’s hotels in Copenhagen.

Hotel SP34

What are the core values of your establishments?

Responsibility, passion and care. Every employee is introduced to these values through an introductory program to make sure that they are reflected throughout the company. Each month, employees are encouraged to nominate colleagues to become the employer of the month, who has manifested these values to a great extent. All colleagues can vote for the nominated candidates. It can seem simple, but it’s something that employees at Brøchner Hotels really care about and put a lot of energy and effort in.

Can you talk us through each property, and their unique personality?

Distinct buildings, unique architecture and design are key. The hotel sites include a former brewery ground, transformer station and a public library. Each boutique hotel has its own character and relation to its surrounding community but signatures such as ‘Good Morning. It’s Organic!’, Brøchner Premium and Wine Hour connect the boutique hotels.

“We believe in being open and welcoming to any guest no matter what your sexuality is”

What makes your hotels special?

We believe in creating environments and interiors with custom-made design and carefully selected furniture and designs that are unique to each of our hotels and hostel. You don’t find the exact combination anywhere else. We believe guests choose a Brøchner hotel because they are looking for something unique and extraordinary. That is also why we make a great deal out of saying that we aim for 100 % guest satisfaction and unique experiences. We know our guests well and want to make them feel at home by being generous, for an example by welcoming them to our daily Wine Hour, where we serve wine on the house to all our hotel guests.

Why are your properties so popular with the gay community?

We believe in being open and welcoming to any guest no matter what your sexuality is. We have a good collaboration with Copenhagen Pride and make a great deal out of celebrating the Pride with our Love Fest every Summer. It’s a fantastic event that all employees look forward to each year. We host various events related to Pride, both a street party and rooftop terrace parties, where we invite all our neighbours and friends to celebrate LOVE.

“Good designs that are tailormade for a hotel combined with specially selected pieces of furniture and design make the ultimate setting for extraordinary experiences”

How important is design for hotels and hospitality today?

It means everything. Good designs that are tailormade for a hotel combined with specially selected pieces of furniture and design make the ultimate setting for extraordinary experiences. We care about the perfect light settings, sound profile, fragrances and every detail in between that make a vibrant hotel. Together with unique architecture, good design is essential, and we believe it’s one of the most important reasons why guests choose to stay at our hotel – and why they come back.

What are some of your favourite places in Copenhagen that people need to know about?

There are so many!

If you stay at Hotel SP34, bike towards Copenhagen City Hall and further down to the canals, where you pass the impressive BLOX building. Cross the canals and stop by Olafur Eliasson’s spectacular Circle Bridge for a beautiful view of the Copenhagen Harbour, grab a cup of coffee to go and enjoy the cosy streets of Christianshavn and end your tour near the Inner Harbour Bridge. It’s a perfect place to grab some street food at Broens Gadekøkken before you head home to SP34.

If you stay at Hotel Ottilia, you can explore the new upcoming area in the Carlsberg City district by foot, go to Vesterbro and the charming street Sønder Boulevard and grab a cup of coffee at Prolog in the Meat Packing District. Have your lunch at one of the cafés in Copenhagen’s charming ‘Little Paris’ street, Værnedamvej, and end the day with dinner at the Italian restaurant Tramonto at Hotel Ottilia, where you can enjoy the stunning views of Copenhagen at sunset.
