Todos Santos Eco Adventures - passion for natural beauty in Baja California Sur

At TOSEA our drive is to share our passion for the phenomenal natural beauty, unique culture, and extraordinary wildlife of Baja. The Baja peninsula is comprised of an amazing collection of diverse ecosystems in a relatively small area, and we create adventures that allow visitors to explore – and help conserve – the oceans, deserts, mountains, islands, estuaries, dunes, coastlines and mangroves that support one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. At TOSEA we are committed to the health and well-being of the local environment. Among other actions, we have eliminated single-use plastics in our business and procurement practices, and we’re working towards becoming carbon neutral. We are members of the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund and our nominated project, Desplastifícate Todos Santos y Pescadero, won a grant in 2018 to help eliminate single-use plastics and styrofoam in our community. But for us, the local environment covers not only the local ecosystems but the people and businesses of Baja California Sur as well. We work closely with and support local individuals and businesses including the local fishing cooperatives along the Pacific coastline, the ranchers and burreros of the Sierra La Laguna mountains, local and independent adventure professionals, and locally owned and operated art galleries, shops, restaurants, hotels, and nonprofit organizations working for the betterment of the local community.

Todos Santos Eco Adventures is the natural expression/culmination of Sergio’s guiding skills and deep knowledge of local flora, fauna and history, combined with Bryan’s business background and love of adventure travel. We set up the business to support and reflect the life we wanted together which featured deep community involvement, a lot of free time for our own personal adventure travel (the low season), and sustainably sharing and helping to protect the remarkable natural beauty of Baja California Sur.

Camp Cecil de la Isla is extremely popular, and while on the island one of the most popular adventures is swimming with the sea lion puppies at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes. The sea lion puppies are so playful and it is such a joyful experience! Swimming with whale sharks in the Bay of La Paz is also extremely popular. People also really love hiking and birding in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve. The area was part of an island 10 million years ago and the isolation means that the area has an extremely high rate of endemism among the flora and fauna, i.e., we find species there that exist no other place on the earth. It’s very exciting.

Isla Espiritu Santo really does all the heavy lifting for guests at Camp Cecil de la Isla. It is a stunningly beautiful, deserted desert island right in the Sea of Cortez – one of the best marine wildlife viewing destinations in the world. It has no permanent structures so it remains wild and natural. We just make it so that guests who might otherwise avoid spending a few nights in such a remote environment have the comfort of real beds, lovely linens and chef-prepared foods to make them comfortable and enhance their experience. Our excellent guides make sure that guests can enjoy all the different adventures that they want, including sea kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, hiking, and birding. There’s really something for everyone – including hanging out at the camp and catching up on your vacation reading!

We are seeing more and more people who are really craving a connection with nature, but who don’t necessarily have the time or experience to put together a trip on their own. Responsible ecotourism providers are helping these travellers connect with remote natural locations in low-impact, responsible ways that encourage and inspire conservation by building an understanding of each person’s deep connection to and responsibility for the environment. It is an exciting and rewarding trend.

Mexico is one of only 12 countries in the world that is considered “mega-diverse” meaning that it has 60% to 70% of the biodiversity of the planet. Baja California Sur is the Mexican state with the most coastline, the lowest population and the highest biodiversity, which means that it is an amazing place to connect with nature. In one vacation you can interact with gray whale mothers and babies in the lagoons of Magdalena Bay, swim with whale sharks in the Bay of La Paz, play tag with sea lion puppies at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes, check out the dance moves of the Blue-footed Boobies at the rookery on La Gaviota, paddle board with 5 of the world’s 7 turtle species and/or release turtle hatchlings into the sea, and observe any number of the 430 bird species that have been spotted in Baja California Sur, including 6 endemic species.
