Kenya at a Glance

There are quite a few things to consider when planning a visit to Kenya. To visit this East African country, you’ll need to make an appointment with a doctor first and ensure that you’ve got all the necessary vaccines for diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, polio and tetanus, as possibly rabies and meningitis jabs, too. If you’re transitioning through high-risk countries or planning an onward journey to Rwanda, Uganda, or Tanzania, you’ll also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Discuss malaria risks with your doctor because these depend on the region you visit. Either way, you’ll want to wear long sleeves and light colours, and bring at least a 50% DEET mosquito repellent to wear during dusk and dawn to avoid mosquito bites. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Kenya banned plastic bags in 2017 – to avoid fines, make sure you don’t have any plastic bags in your checked or carry-on luggage (this includes any duty-free bags). Once it is Kenya, it’s a good idea to stick to bottled water, even though tap water is presumed safe for drinking in Nairobi and Mombasa. LGBT travellers shouldn’t experience problems in Kenya as long as they are completely discreet. Public displays of affection remain inappropriate between any two people of any orientation. Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya, and anything to do with it is considered taboo. In terms of when to visit, the best time to go to Kenya for safaris is in the dry seasons – between January and March and then from July to October. During this time, the Great Migration takes place, and the chances of seeing wildlife are the best.
