The best hotels in Myrtle Beach

The South Carolina city of Myrtle Beach is a thriving subtropical playground centred on a 60-mile stretch of sand known as the Grand Strand. Every year, 14 million visitors flock here for the promise of sun, sea, sand, and a huge number of golf courses. The retail therapy available at the more eclectic gathering of stores on the waterfront also draws quite a crowd. Several bars proudly fly the rainbow flag, and the city even celebrates its own Pride festival each year around the beginning of June. We round up the best gay-friendly hotels in Myrtle Beach.

Just three blocks from the beach, Gulf Stream Cottages is one of Myrtle Beach’s newest communities. Close to some of the city’s major tourist attractions, including Cancun Lagoon Golf Adventure, the pastel-coloured two-storey cottages each have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, in addition to a fully-equipped kitchen and a communal pool in which to dip your toes. The family-friendly Wyndham Vacation Resorts aparthotel in the Cherry Grove area consists of a high-rise building with private beach access. Offering style with a retro twist, the largely white interior and blue highlights aim to echo the building’s fine location. Each apartment features fully-equipped kitchens with washing and drying facilities, a top-quality fitness centre, and several pools. An on-site tourist desk will also help you plan each day of your vacation, whether you’re itching to shop ‘til you drop, play a round of golf, or explore one of the region’s top museums.

Also right on the beach, and just a short distance from the SkyWheel Ferris wheel, South Bay Inn & Suites can be found on the famed Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, in the very heart of the city. Boasting its own water park, with two slides, lazy river ride, hot tubs, and seasonal outdoor pool, the complex offers everything you need for an adventurous day in the sun. The resort also has a number of tempting dining options for meal times and compact but functional kitchenettes in its suites. Anyone with a taste for the great outdoors might prefer a stay at The Inlet Sports Lodge. Located in Murrells Inlet, south of the city centre, The Inlet is a boutique hotel curated to meet the needs of any golf aficionado, angling enthusiast, or boating fan. In the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk and Marina complex, you’re never far from fresh, award-winning Lowcountry dining or an assortment of different water sports. The Inlet is also close to many of the region’s best golf courses, including the affiliated Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, and True Blue Golf Plantation.

You can find equally impressive sporting facilities at Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, whose beautiful location is mere blocks from the Atlantic waves on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, a 3,000-mile canal that stretches from Boston in the north to Texas in the south. In addition to a championship golf course, Marina Inn includes a tennis club, fully-serviced yacht marina, and water sports pontoon. If you think you might miss that breath-taking Atlantic Ocean view, Tilghman Beach and Golf Resort on the coast of North Myrtle Beach may be a better option. The unobstructed ocean views from each unit’s private balcony are just one of the attractions of this resort, which also boasts a variety of pools and water rides. A pool bar is also open for hot and cold lunches. A short distance to the south, Anderson Ocean Club and Spa is a breezy five-minute drive from the centre of Myrtle Beach; the Broadway on the Beach complex of shops, attractions, and restaurants is an equal distance away. The long list of facilities is similar to those at Tilghman, although the building’s architecture owes its inspiration to Morocco and southern Spain, and each room comes with a fully-equipped kitchen and washing machine.

The three-star Courtyard by Marriot – Barefoot Landing is situated a little further inland, on Commons Boulevard, with Myrtle Beach less than half a mile away. Its rooms come to life in vibrant colours—stretch out, for example, on one of the cerulean blue sofas in the dedicated seating area. A state-of-the-art fitness centre complements the hotel’s modern features as much as the complimentary teatree lemon sage body lotion complements skin that’s endured a day beneath the sun. Bluegreen Vacations Horizon at 77th is a three-star beachside resort by Ascend Resort. The spacious one- to three-bedroom suites may be classic in their styling, but offer all you could want from a trip to Myrtle Beach, be that indoor and outdoor swimming pools or private kitchens in each of the suites.
